CARDS Happy Birthday Challenge

Friday, August 19, 2011

Good afternoon!  What a day it has been for us!  We were startled in the middle of the night to a tremendous thud on our roof.  Unfortunately, we're all too familiar with that noise.  Check out my Excitement Is in the Air post, nearly two years ago now, to see why.  Anyway, immediately, we knew that another branch had hit our roof.  It was really blowing and storming, and we couldn't see much in the darkness other than to confirm our suspicions, but check out what we discovered this morning.  This was the view from our screened-in porch.
I was able to get close enough to see the largest branch poking up over the top of one of our sheds...
but the real view came when I went around the front of the house.  Here's the tree the branch(es) fell from.
Take a little closer look at where they came from.  The entire tippy top of our tree is lying on our back patio/garden/roof.  Ugh!
I did open the back gate to check on my flower gardens.  Ugh!  Lord, please, help them still be alive and well under all that debris.
And here's that big, branch end, that I saw from the back porch.
Anyway, my hubby is coming home, from work, early to get a start at uncovering the mess and rescuing our little house.  It doesn't look as though it did much more damage, to our property itself, than pulling a rain gutter down.  Fortunately, that's an easy fix.  I guess we'll soon find out for sure, though.  In the meantime, I'm thrilled to share a card that I made, for my sister's birthday, awhile back and kinda forgot about, until it was featured in CREATE:'s CARDS: Birthday Cards Challenge Gallery yesterday.  Woohoo!  Thanks, Paige!  The layout was inspired by this creation by Melissa Phillips.  So, please, check it out!
I started this card by piecing the patterned papers onto a piece of Whisper White cardstock and machine stitching, around their outside edges, with white-threaded, straight stitches and, between their connections, with white-threaded, zig-zag stitches.
I then white embossed the "Happy Birthday" sentiment in the bottom center of the prepped piece, before adhering it to the Pink Pirouette, cardstock, card face.
The die-cut, floral circle was cut from the center of a die-cut; wrapped with a length of white, seam binding ribbon, which was tied, in a dressy bow, near the top of the die-cut and embellished with a teal, felt, star button, laced with a Caribbean Twine bow; and adhered in the center of the card face.
A length of green lace, adhered to the left of the ribbon, and a trio of color-coordinating buttons, laced with white string and adhered to the right of the ribbon...
complete the look.
Oh!  And before the catastrophe above, I did get our bathroom painted.  The original color I picked out, back here, was way darker in person than on the swatch, so I used lots and lots of white to tone it down.  The brightest bucket below is the original color.  The top, medium color is what I painted the walls; and the far right, lightest color is what I painted the ceiling.  LOVE!
Thanks so much for stopping by, ya'll!  And have a terrific weekend!  After the cleanup, BJ and I are having a long-overdue date night.  Yippeee!
