The Studio Heroes Challenge

Sunday, February 28, 2016

Hey, y'all!  Just stopping in to share my take on a brand new challenge from The Studio.  We want to see who your hero is this go around.  I couldn't resist scrapping pics of my family's World Series celebrations for this one.  Our Kansas City Royals are not only the 2015 Champions, but after 30 years of waiting for that trophy, they will, no doubt, be our heroes for a long time to come.
I started this layout by piecing a number of color-coordinating, patterned papers, onto the navy, stripe, patterned, paper, base page, behind where my photo grid, which was matted with white cardstock, would lie.  I then splattered everything with Sky Mr. Huey's, Navy Color Shine, and both Pure Black and Titanium White acrylic paints.  Once that was dry, I anchored my papers with gold-threaded, straight, machine stitches; adhered my photos; and grounded the look with a gold, chipboard, "best ever" phrase.
Just to the left of that, I secured the "OUR HEROS" title, which was made from teal, foam, glitter Thickers.  I realize now that heroes has another "e" in it, but it didn't look right when I was creating my page.  So, I removed it.  Oh, well.  Nobody's perfect ;).  (Edited to add: You'll be happy to know that the "e" has since been added back to the title, and all is right with the world again.)
Continuing in a counterclockwise rotation, I dressed up the top left photo, which is a screenshot of our television when the Commissioner's Trophy was making its way through the crowd, with a "YES IT'S TRUE>>" wood veneer bit...
as well as an "A Good Memory" flair button, which grounds a "THANKS" die cut.  The latter, which I hand-cut into the shape of a pennant, seemed fitting for such a great season.
I tucked a journaling tag under their combined top edge and used it to journal, 30 years is an awful long time to wait for our boys in blue to bring another World Series trophy home, but we couldn't be any more excited or proud.  It was such a great season!  We would've loved to go to the parade/rally that KC threw in their honor, but when I found out they cancelled school, the thought of doing so, with 3 kids in tow, overwhelmed me beyond words.  So, we watched the over 800,000 fans celebrate, while having lunch, in the comfort of our living room.  Go, Royals!
The tag itself was created by hand-cutting the shape of two tags from a black, floral print.  I then sandwiched a piece of vellum, hand-cut slightly larger than the prior, between them; punched their top center; framed it with a die-cut, from Night of Navy cardstock, stitched circle; and laced it with a length of white string, tied in a bow.  I left the navy circle off the back to help me remember which side was the front.  Nobody wants to start reading in the middle of a memory.  I also added a dab of glue in the knot of the bow so that it wouldn't come untied when the string ends were inevitably tugged on to read the journaling.
A "smile" Polaroid was then tucked under the right edge of the top right photo.  Under that, I tucked a gold label for the handwritten, Nov. 3, 2015, date; and over it, I stapled a "PLAY HARD", acrylic banner.
Finally, in the center of the photo grid, I adhered a cork heart over a gold, heart die cut; backed the pair with a blue label and polka dot tag, laced with white string; and topped them with an open heart die cut, as well as a blue, enamel heart.  A wood veneer heart; epoxy brad; and scattering of aqua, sequin rubons complete the look.
Further inspiration for this page came from Clique Kit's February Challenge: Anything Goes and Scrap Our Stash's February Sketch + 3 Challenge.  I went with a Dear Lizzy, black, polka dot, patterned paper; lots of ephemera from Jen Hadfield and Pink Paislee; and an October Afternoon flair button for my plus three.
I also found inspiration in Hip Kit Club's February Mood Board.  Those bold, navy stripes and polka dot pumps, in the top right corner, started things off.  I was also drawn to the natural woodgrain elements, which I tried to mimic with cork and wood veneer bits, in the photo below that.  The teals and aquas, injected throughout the board, popped out at me as well.
You have until Sunday, March 13, 2016, to link up your takes, on this week's Heroes Challenge and/or our February Sketch Challenge, in the right-hand column of The Studio blog.  Be sure to stop by the challenge link above to see how the rest of the team has done, too.  We added a whole new crop of designers to our mix at the beginning of the month, and folks, they've got talent!  Thanks so much for stopping by, and have a great week!

Love this layout Jinny, the story is so true I was always so nervous taking small children into a big crowd and one that might be a bit wild. Love that you did a layout about this event and what a fabulous one too. I am still sore that my boys in blue (The Jays) weren't the ones bringing home the trophy but in the end only one team can win and they did bring it home two years in a row back in the day-LOL
