Welcome to the weekend, friends! Just popping in, as promised, with my pick for this month's For the Love of Books post. With summer coming to an end and all our kiddos getting back to the books soon, I thought it might be fun to share a playful, school-themed number. This book, written for children ages three to six, is the perfect way to spark a little creativity and encourage a child reluctant to get back into their school-year routine or even one who may be stuck in the doldrums of a mid-year schedule.
On My Way to School, written by Sarah Maizes and illustrated by Michael Paraskevas, is the story of an imaginative, little girl named Livi, who does not want to go to school. School, after all, "is for people who need to learn stuff," and Livi has "gone to school a hundred times and already [knows] lots of stuff." That's how she knows how to ooze slowly out of bed like a slippery, slimy snail; dig through her drawers, in search of something to wear, like a pirate hunting for treasure; and blow her sister out of the watering hole, to get the bathroom sink all to herself, like a loud, pushy elephant. On her way to school, she dons her enormous backpack to "lead a group of fearless explorers to the top of Mount Everest"; becomes a wild lemur, jumping from tree to tree, to avoid being eaten by the hungry tigers on the bus; and even sashays, as an autograph-signing movie star, down the red carpet of the school bus stairs. With an imagination like Livi's, it's easy to see how she quickly forgets why she was hesitant to go to school in the first place; is able to wear a smile all day long; and even becomes the teacher herself, before the day is through.
I hope you all are still enjoying my monthly book picks. As of this month, I've been writing these summaries for exactly four years here on my blog. Just click on the For the Love of Books label below to read more; and whether you've been relishing in these children's books for a long time or have just started reading, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks so much for sharing a portion of your Saturday with me! Happy reading!
