Cider Hill Family Orchard

Tuesday, October 11, 2016

Hey, y'all!  I've got lots of pictures, from our trip to Branson last week, that I'm still sorting through; but while I do so, I thought I'd share a few from our visit to Cider Hill Family Orchard this past weekend.  If you're a regular follower of my blog, you know that it has become a family tradition of ours to go apple picking in the fall.  Then, we spend an entire Saturday making and canning four large batches of my apple butter in preparation for the holiday season.
We had planned to do our picking the same weekend that Ezekiel needed to have his emergency appendectomy.  So, we had to postpone until this past weekend; and unfortunately, the apple picking was sparse.  Matter of fact, upon our arrival, we were told that, due to this year's early rainy season, there weren't any apples left to pick.  Fortunately, we ran into a super sweet lady in the gift shop, while we were purchasing apple doughnuts for all, who encouraged us to still go out to the orchards to see what we could find.
The kids had so much fun climbing to the tippy tops of the trees in search of any passable apples and, of course, munching on a few along the way.  Gotta love these smiles!
We ended up picking just a bushel and a half; but I think that if I pair this haul with the ones we picked off our own apple tree in our front yard, we'll still be able to get in at least three batches of my apple butter.
I also wanted to mention that this was our first visit to Cider Hill; and we'll most likely be making the trip back up to Schweizer Orchards, in St. Joseph, Missouri, again next year.  Their apples are always so much bigger, which means far less time in the kitchen on our apple-butter-making Saturday, and healthier than the orchards we've visited here in Kansas.  Plus, in my opinion, they do a better job keeping their orchards cleaner and happier for picking overall.
So, that's the long and short of it, folks.  We spent the rest of the weekend doing yard-work, attempting to accomplish some long-overdue organization throughout our home, attending church together as a family, and getting things ready for another week of school.  Nothing too exciting, but it all ensures that our focuses can be where they need to be for the week ahead.  I'll be back tomorrow to share a creation for the Poppystamps blog.  Until then, thanks so much for checking in on us, and have a truly blessed week, friends!  Hugs!

Your pictures are's worth a trip through the orchard to get these shots! :)

We went to Cider Hill this year, too. And I really miss the apple orchard we love to visit in North Carolina. I've been a bit disappointed in the apples in Kansas as well.
