For the Love of Books

Wednesday, July 31, 2019

Afternoon, book lovers!  Just stopping in to share a recent, library find for this month's For the Love of Books pick.  This one is close to my heart, because the author is a homeschool graduate; and I love the way that he's been able to capture the reality of sun-up to sun-down learning, in every part of his messy, but happy, home and beloved city, through language and colorful, hand-drawn illustrations.  This book is written for children ages three to six and being posted just in time for a little, back-to-school, reading enjoyment for all.
This Is My Home, This Is My School, written and illustrated by Jonathan Bean, reveals the comings and goings of a homeschool day in the life of a young boy and his classmate sisters, not to mention their teacher mother and substitute father (because sometimes mom just gets too tired and has to call in reinforcements).  Through a wide variety of learning environments, both inside and outside and at home and abroad, to the cafeteria, complete with a crabby, lunch lady, and giant, backyard playground, "no moment, whether at desk, dinner table, stream, play, or work, [is] too insignificant to be scavenged for something to learn."

Thanks so much for visiting!  We'll be hitting the books again the middle of next week, and I know many will follow soon thereafter.  So, may this school year, whether that means a traditional or nontraditional school environment for you and your loved ones, be your best one yet!

Pretty Little Studio: Fall Days

Saturday, July 27, 2019

Welcome to the weekend, y'all!  I'm keeping busy with a yard sale today in hopes of generating a little income for school supplies, as well as to cover some of the everyday expenses that we seem to continually be behind on amidst taking care of a family of five; but I didn't want to miss stopping in here to share a new page that's up on the Pretty Little Studio blog today.  It was inspired by the gorgeous, watercolor, leaf die cuts that came in the April 2018 Freebie package and some seven-year-old photos that have been patiently waiting to make their way into an album.  Enjoy!
I started this page by adding puddles of blue and orange watercolors to the 12" x 12" watercolor, paper, base page.  I then splattered it with those same shades of watercolor, as well as purple and bright pink watercolors and Pure Black and Titanium White, acrylic paints.  The background was then stamped, in Jet Black, Strawberry Slush, Perfect Plum, and Lucky Limeade inks respectively, with a variety of different sizes of open and closed leaves.  That set the stage for my photos, which were matted with white cardstock and set atop piles of Potpourri, Feels Like Fall, and Savannah Dreams prints, most of which were anchored with gold-threaded, straight, machine stitching.  A cluster of leaves, including a couple hand-cut from the Falling Leaves print; one Cameo-cut from the Campfire print; an April 2018 Freebie Die Cut, popped up with foam tape; and a Falling Leaves Sequin, embellish the top, left corner of the larger photo.
The Cameo-cut, from Basic Black cardstock, "fall days ARE THE best DAYS" title, which was given lots of dimension and shine with Glossy Accents, was anchored with more Cameo-cut, from the I Love Fall print, and hand-cut, from the Falling Leaves print, leaves.  Another Falling Leaves Sequin and April 2018 Freebie Die Cut create its right-side boundary.
The smaller photo was backed with a snippet of cheesecloth and anchored with a "love this" April 2018 Freebie, phrase die cut, as well as a "SO MUCH FUN TOGETHER" Say It Clear Sticker, backed with white cardstock and popped up with foam tape.
Another Cameo-cut, from the Pile of Leaves print, leaf, as well as one final Falling Leaves Sequin, anchors a Love Today 3x4 Journaling Card...
which was stapled with a "NOVEMBER" Get Tabbed Die Cut.  A scattering of mustard, enamel dots completes the look.
Thanks, as always, for visiting!  Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

Pretty Little Studio: You Can Do It!

Thursday, July 18, 2019

Morning, y'all!  You'd think it would be quiet in my neck of the woods this week, as Ezekiel is back in Kansas visiting his Grandpa and Grandma, and Adina is at kid's camp in Ruidoso, New Mexico; but it has been nothing of the sort.  Kaden chatters enough for all three of them.  LOL!  It hasn't even been any less crazy than usual, as we've had all sorts of unwanted busy going on.  Aaaahhhh!  Life really needs to cut me some slack.  All that aside, we'll all be back together again by this weekend, beginning with Adina's return home later this afternoon.  This is the first time that she's been away from home for more than one night, and I've missed her so much that it carried over into my scrapping time this week and presented itself in the form of a layout that happens to be up on the Pretty Little Studio blog this am.  Check it out!
I started this page by adding white gesso to the Savannah Dreams 12x12 Paper Pack insert background.  Once it was dry and I'd stamped a few open stars, in Jet Black ink, throughout the design, I added puddles of yellow, pink, and blue watercolors over the gesso and splattered everything with those same watercolors, as well as aqua watercolor and Pure Black and Titanium White, acrylic paints.  That set the stage for my photos which were matted with white cardstock and backed with a happy mix of So Much Happiness, Daydreams, Out of the Box, and Birthday Cake scraps, the bulk of which were anchored with black-threaded, straight, machine stitching, as well as a torn bit of Silent Bloom Vellum.  The left-side photo was also backed with a snippet of cheesecloth and topped with a "fly free" Happy Place Die Cut.
It was then sandwiched between a Cherish Today 3x4 Pocket Card, which I used to house my journaling, which reads, Teaching you to read has truly been one of my greatest joys.  Nothing is going to stop you now, beautiful girl...
and the right-side photo, which was wrapped, three times, with a length of white string, tied in a bow...
stapled with a simple "april" Get Tabbed Die Cut...
popped up with foam tape; and crowned with a Happy Place Die-Cut hot air balloon, as well as the "you can do it!" Cactus Die-Cut title.
A Savannah Dreams 12x12 Paper Pack cloud, with its colorful raindrops trimmed off, serves as a backdrop for a couple of additional, hot air balloons.  The two were Cameo-cut from white cardstock and paper-pieced with color-coordinating prints from six different collections, including Savannah Dreams, Dream Big, Tales & Dreams, Home for Christmas, Ain't Life Grand, and Here + There.  Both of these balloons also had their baskets colored in with a Canary Yellow Prismacolor pencil and mineral spirits and were popped up with foam tape.
A scattering of Crystal 4mm and 8mm Sequins, as well as a trio of hand-cut, from the Beauty print in the Here Comes the Sun: Up in the Air 6x6 Paper Pack, hot air balloons trail from the top to the bottom of the design.  It is at the base of the design where a trio of word phrases, including a "GOOD TIMES" My Story Die Cut, popped up with foam tape; "be brave, don't hesitate, you can do it!" All Together Word Sticker; and "SO SWEET" Happy Place Die Cut, complete the look.
Thanks so much for visiting, friends!  Have a fabulous rest of your week!  Hugs!

Pretty Little Studio: Gone Fishing

Monday, July 8, 2019

Welcome to the work week, y'all!  My family has special visitors this week; and I'm already exhausted from celebrating the 4th of July holiday, my big kiddo's 16th birthday, and my hubby and my 18th anniversary over the last week.  So, I'm just going to get right to the page I want to share with you all.  It happens to be up on the Pretty Little Studio blog today and highlights pictures, taken just over six year ago now, of said big kiddo.  He's grown up way to fast!
I started this page by adding puddles of yellow and blue watercolors to the 12" x 12" watercolor paper, base page.  I then splattered it with those same watercolor shades, as well as aqua watercolor, and stamped it, in Brocade Blue, Brilliant Blue, and Pool Party inks, with a number of different sizes of solid and dotted circles and, in Lucky Limeade, Night of Navy, Daffodil Delight, and Jet Black inks, with a variety of fish.  It was then splattered once again, but this time with Pure Black and Titanium White, acrylic paints.  My first photo was matted with white cardstock and laid atop bits of Night Shade, Straight to the Sun, and Giggle Squiggle Vellum.  I also tucked a 3x4 Journaling Card from an old collection, as well as a Beautiful Bookmark Journaling Card, into the mix and anchored the first two of the initial list with black-threaded, straight, machine stitching.  The photo was grounded with a Today Acrylic Shape...
and topped with an "everyday life"  Everyday Words Flair Button.
I also stapled a Label Medley Die Cut, housing the stamped, in Jet Black ink, JUN 01 2013, date, to its right edge and hand-etched the Shawnee Mission Park location, of this particular fishing trip, just above that.
The middle photo was also matted with white cardstock and backed with scraps of Carry On; Always Strive, anchored with black-threaded, straight, machine stitching; and Silent Bloom Vellum.  The bottom photo, too, was matted with white cardstock; wrapped with a length of white string, tied in a bow; backed with a few of the same prints used above...
and anchored, at its left side, with the darling Miles Vintage Die Cut, nestled in a couple of Family Branch Die Cuts and popped up with foam tape.
My "GONE FISHING" title was created from Navy Alpha Stickers...
and a stamped, in Jet Black ink, "You're a KEEPER!" phrase, as well as an "enjoy the little things" Hello Word White Phrase Sticker and "OUR HAPPY PLACE!" All Together Word Sticker, rounds out the space between my right-side photos.  A happy mix of Always Aqua Sequins completes the look.
Before I run, I also wanted to share the festive July Cut-Apart Sheet Freebie with any purchase...
and the July Word Die Cuts Freebie with any purchase of $35 or more.  So fun!  Be sure to pick yours up today!
Thanks so much for visiting, friends!  Have an amazing week!  Mwah!
