For the Love of Books

Friday, January 31, 2020

Afternoon, y'all!  As I was re-evaluating for a new year, it appeared as though these For the Love of Books posts were continuing to draw a number of new and old visitors to my blog.  So, for now, as long as you're enjoying them, I'm going to continue writing them; for there will never be a short supply of wonderful, children's books to share!  So, let's kick this year off with a winter-themed treasure written by one of my all-time favorite author/illustrators.
The Snowy Nap, written and illustrated by Jan Brett, tells the story of Hedgie, the hedgehog, and his sleepy stroll around the farm on his way to hibernate for the winter.  As he rambled, his farm friends recalled the winter fun that he missed, while he was sleeping last year.  '"I don't want to sleep all winter like last year," protested Hedgie.  "I want to see icicles and snowmen, snowflakes and pond ice.  I want to hear sleigh bells."  Before Hedgie could yawn again, he decided to turn around and stay up for winter;' but nature objected, and Hedgie dozed off on the pebbled walkway.  The farmer's daughter found him just before a snowstorm blew in and gave him a cozy spot, inside the house, by the window.  From there, as he dozed in and out of consciousness, on his way to deep sleep, and before the farmer's daughter nestled him in his burrow, Hedgie caught glimpses of all the wonders of winter, glimpses that would fill his dreams with joy during his "long snowy nap."

Thanks so much for reading!  Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

Pretty Little Studio: Feb. 14th

Thursday, January 30, 2020

Morning, y'all!  With Valentine's Day being only two weeks away, I dug deep into my stash to produce an on-trend treasure honorable of the big day.  It happens to be up on the Pretty Little Studio blog today and boasts goodies from our Christmas Joy, XOXO, Savannah Dreams, and With All My Heart Collections.  Check it out!
I started this page by adding smudges and splatters of Patina, Aquamarine, and Strawberry Cream Glimmer Mists across the background of the 12" x 12" textured, white, cardstock, base page.  I cannot tell you how much I adore the shimmer and shine in Glimmer Mists, and they're ever so easy to manipulate.  Once that was dry, I also splattered the page with Pure Black and Titanium White, acrylic paints.  I then Cameo-cut the background cut file, which I hand-cut into smaller portions, from the Christmas List 12x12 print and anchored it with white-threaded, straight, machine stitching.  That set the stage for my photos, which were matted with white cardstock and backed with a couple of prints from the XOXO 8x8 Paper Pack, both of which were anchored with white-threaded, straight, machine stitching, as well as a bit from the Wrapping Presents print, stitched in place once again, and two torn scraps from the Savannah Dreams 8x8 Paper Pack.  I also tucked in a snippet of cheesecloth, as well as a bit of a 4" Cambridge Doily, for that texture that you all know I love so much.  The top photo was then embellished with an "i adore you" Love Word Flag Die Cut, laced with Baker's Twine, tied in a bow, and popped up with foam tape.
I dressed up the opposite side of my photos with a Cherish Today 3x4 Pocket Card, topped with that gorgeous Damask Rose Vintage Die Cut, popped up with foam tape and backed with a Forever Hearts Metallic Foil Die Cut.  The "FEB. 14TH" February 2018 Freebie Die Cut serves as my title...
and a couple of Makes Me Smile Die Cuts trail off the pocket card onto the page itself.
Another portion of that same 4" Cambridge Doily used above was adhered against the right side of my page, just above horizontal center, and topped with a couple of hearts, one from the February 2018 Freebie Die-Cuts package and another from the Darling Journaling Die-Cuts package, as well as the "VALENTINE" February 2018 Freebie Die Cut and a "perfection" A Great Day Flag Sticker.
The "LOVE TODAY" Us Flair Button crowns my design.  A trio of hand-cut, from the Roses Clear 8x8 print, blooms, as well as a number of Heart Warming Stickers and a few wood veneer snowflakes from my stash, were scattered throughout the design to complete the look.
Thanks so much for stopping by!  Be blessed, friends!

Pretty Little Studio: Document Life Cards

Saturday, January 25, 2020

Welcome to the weekend, y'all!  We're back to those home improvement projects, as last weekend, again today before having dinner, with family friends, later tonight; but I'm looking forward to relaxing and having a little time to play with my papers tomorrow.  Until then, this trio of cards, inspired by the Document Life Collection, will have to suffice.  They happen to be up on the Pretty Little Studio blog today, too.  Check 'em out!
Let's get a little up close and personal.  Shall we?
I started this card by anchoring a 4" x 5-1/4" piece of the Today print, to the white, cardstock, card face, with white-threaded, straight, machine stitching.  The "IT'S A GOOD DAY" Highlights Pocket Card had all four of its corners rounded with a 1-3/8" circle punch.  It was then backed with a Jazzy Bookmark Pennant Card, as well as a snippet of cheesecloth for texture...
laced with a length of Baker's Twine, tied in a bow through a punched hole; and popped off the surface of the card face with foam tape.
The "today" Seen & Noted Color Die Cut was popped up, with foam tape, near the bottom of the pocket card, along with a "feeling fine" Happy Day Color Sticker.  I gave a little shine and dimension to the prior with Glossy Accents.  Lots of Destination Star Die Cuts, some of which were popped up with foam tape, as well as a happy scattering of Gift Wrap, Rose Pink, and Sunsational Sequins, along with the blue sequins from the Falling Leaves Sequin Mix package and Lovely Clear Confetti, complete the look.
The second card was made in the same way as the first with only a few exceptions.  It boasts a piece of the Rosie print, anchored with white-threaded, straight, machine stitching, over the white, cardstock, card face.
The "DAILY" Highlights Pocket Card was punched and laced with Baker's twine, tied in a bow in the same way as the first...
but it had its left side punched with a notebook pattern.  A few different Destination Star Die Cuts and the same mix of sequins, as the first, were scattered throughout the design.
A "love love love" Seen & Noted Color Die Cut, popped up with foam tape in the frame provided by the pocket card and topped with a "hey friend" Happy Day Color Sticker, complete the look.
The third and final card shows off the colorful rays in the Wheely Fun print.  It, too, was anchored, with white-threaded, straight, machine stitching, to the white, cardstock, card face.
Another length of Baker's Twine was laced through a punched hole in the "LOVE THIS SO MUCH." Highlights Pocket Card...
which had also been punched, down its right side, with a bracket pattern.  It was popped up with foam tape over both a Jazzy Bookmark Pennant Card and a snippet of cheesecloth in the same way as the two cards above.  It also was embellished with the same scattering of Destination Star Die Cuts and mix of sequins.
"Here & now" and "life" Seen & Noted Color Die Cuts, popped up with foam tape, and a "so much fun" Happy Day Color Sticker complete the look.
Thanks so much for visiting!  Have an amazing weekend, friends!

Hip Kit Club: Let's Stay In

Tuesday, January 21, 2020

Morning, y'all!  I have a recent, Hip Kit Club, blog project to share, with you all, today.  It was inspired by the metallics and hexagon, not to mention the color palette, found in the Mood Board below and boasts goodies from both the November and December 2019 Main Kits, as well as the December 2019 Embellishment and Color Kits.  I paired it all with pics of my littlest from when he was about nine-months-old.  It's so hard for me to believe that he will be turning six-years-old in less than two weeks!
I started this page by adding puddles of Martina's Marigold, Jana's Jade, and Andrea's Azalea Magical Powders to the 12" x 12" watercolor, paper, base page.  I then splattered it with those same Lindy's Gang Magical Powders, as well as Pure Black & Titanium White acrylic paints.  That set the stage for my hexagons which were Cameo-cut from the Silent Night and All Is Bright prints from the November 2019 Main Kit and the Frosted, Harmony, Color Flow, and Everglow prints from the December 2019 Main Kit.  They were all anchored, with copper-threaded, straight, machine stitches, around my hand-cut, hexagon photos, which were matted with white cardstock.  I then scattered lots of hand-cut, from the Foil Star Cardstock, and Chipboard Sticker stars, as well as Chill Foil Accent Thickers snowflakes, throughout the design.
I used the "let's stay in" Chipboard Sticker tag, laced with white string, tied in a bow, as my title.  It was sandwiched between another Chipboard Sticker snow-globe, topped with a So Frosty Die-Cut bow and a "SO VERY chilly" So Frosty Flair Button.
Moving clockwise, I dressed up the bottom corner with a So Frosty Die-Cut pair of ice-skates, popped up with foam tape and backed with a couple of the elements already mentioned above.
A trio of Chipboard Sticker trees and snowman create the bulk of the cluster in the bottom, left corner of my design.  It was further embellished with Chill Foil Accent Sticker trees; a "Winter is coming" So Frosty Die-Cut phrase; So Frosty Flair Button, backed with a tangle of copper thread; and a Make a Wish Tree Die Cut from the November 2019 Main Kit.
A "baby bear" phrase, made from Black Foil Chipboard Thickers, brings us back to the top of the page and completes the look.  My little guy got this nickname because he was born five weeks early and covered in lots of blond lanugo.
Here's that gorgeous Mood Board that started it all.
Thanks ever so much for humbling me with a visit!  Have a blessed day, friends!

Hip Kit Club: 'Tis the Season to Be Freezin'

Saturday, January 18, 2020

Morning, friends, and welcome to the weekend!  I trust you all have spectacular plans for a relaxing, fun-filled couple of days.  We're using our time off work and school to tackle another home-improvement project.  They're never-ending but rewarding.  So, I'm not going to complain.  Follow me on Instagram and at #uppervalleyupdates if you want to see what we're up to.

Anyhow, I have a new, Hip Kit Club page to share today.  One of my pet peeves for any and all kit club inspiration has always been that I never seem to have the same products the design team uses.  Previously, that has been due to the fact that, in general, main kits themselves usually house more than enough goodies to keep me creating for a month.  So, I never needed nor had the extra funds just lying around to purchase add-ons, no matter how desirable they may have been.  If you can relate, I've got a winter-themed treasure, utilizing the Exclusive Winter Wonderland cut file and December 2019 Main Kit only, just for you.  Check it out!
For the first time in a long time, I didn't touch this scrumptious, Frozen Sky 12" x 12", background paper with an ounce of mixed media.  It was just too perfect to mar like that ;).  So, I jumped right in to cutting all the tags and tickets, which I layered behind my matted, with white cardstock, photos, from the Marshmallow cut-apart sheet.  I used simple, office supply store, reinforcement labels to surround the punched holes and laced all the tags with white string lengths, a couple of which were tied in bows.
I then backed the right photo with a scrap of the Color Flow print, anchored with copper-threaded, straight, machine stitching, as well as a couple of extra, hand-cut, from the Marshmallow cut-apart sheet, tags...
and the left photo with a scrap of the Winterscape print, anchored with copper-threaded, straight, machine stitching.  The latter was further topped with a sweet, little, So Frosty Die-Cut bird, popped up with foam tape.
The photos, as a unit, were then sandwiched between a So Frosty Die-Cut deer, penguin, and snowman...
as well as snowmen, hand-cut from the Frosted print, all popped up with foam tape...
and grounded with the So Frosty Die-Cut, "'Tis the season to be freezin'" title; "Brrrr" Chill Foil Phrase Thickers; and a stamped, in Jet Black ink, "FUN DAY DEC 29 2015" date.
I then tossed lots of snowflakes into the design, including Chill Foil Accent Thickers; So Frosty Die Cuts; and ones Cameo-cut, from Vellum, using the Winter Wonderland Exclusive Cut File.  A couple of So Frosty Die-Cut hearts and lots of pink Crystals complete the look.
Thanks so much for visiting!  Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

Hip Kit Club: So Frosty Cards

Tuesday, January 14, 2020

Morning, y'all!  Just popping back in to share a Hip Kit Club project that was up on the blog this past weekend.  My assignment was to create cards with shaker pockets, and I used the December 2019 Main Kit and Embellishment Kit to create a trio in celebration of the New Year.  Check 'em out!
Let's get a little up close and personal.  Shall we?
I started this card by anchoring a piece of the Snowcapped print and a strip of the Harmony print, to the white, cardstock, card face, with gold-threaded, straight, machine stitching.  I then wrapped a length of white string, three times, horizontally, around the center of the wide, patterned, paper strip and tied it, in a bow, near the right edge of the card face.
The shaker pocket was created by backing one of the Polaroid Die Cuts with a 3" square piece of clear cardstock; stuffing it with a happy mix of sequins and seed beads; popping it up, with foam tape, over a 3" square piece of the Color Flow patterned paper; and adhering it, to the card face, just to the left of the white, string bow and sandwiched between a Paper Die-Cut pennant, which was cut in half to extend its reach.  It was then embellished with a quartet of Paper Die-Cut embellishments...
and word bubbles, some of which were popped up with foam tape.  A trio of Chill Foil Accent Thickers stars complete the look.
The second card...
was created in a similar fashion to the first with the exception of the opposite side of the Snowcapped print being used for the background and the white string being tied, in a bow, to the opposite side of the card face.
Another Polaroid Die Cut was used in the same way as above, to create the shaker pocket, which was stuffed with the same goodies as above and adhered to the right of the string bow and sandwiched between a chevron, Paper Die-Cut pennant, prepped in the same way as above.  A Floral Die Cut and quartet of Paper Die-Cut embellishments...
and word bubbles, as well as the same scattering of Chill Foil Accent Thickers stars, complete the look.
For the third and final card...
I used the opposite side of the Harmony print for the background; and the white string was tied, in a bow, back to the right side of the card face.  Another Polaroid Die Cut, prepared in the same way as above, including being sandwiched between yet another extended, Paper Die-Cut pennant but with the exception of a Paper Die-Cut tab being stapled to its top, right edge, creates the shaker pocket.
A handful of Paper Die-Cut embellishments and word phrases...
one lonely Floral Die Cut, and the same trio of Chill Foil Accent Thickers stars complete the look.
Thanks so much for visiting!  I hope that you're enjoying seeing and playing with what these kits have to offer as much as I am.  Be blessed, friends!

Pretty Little Studio: Home for Christmas

Monday, January 13, 2020

Welcome to the work week, y'all!  Just popping in to share a new, Pretty Little Studio page, boasting a little something from all four of our Christmas collections, including Glitter & Ice, Winter Joy, Christmas Joy, and Home for Christmas.  I had such fun putting this one together.  Check it out!
I started this page by adding puddles of blue, periwinkle, and aqua watercolors to the 12" x 12" watercolor, paper, base page.  I then splattered it with those same shades of watercolor, as well as pink and purple watercolors; smudged Squeezed Lemonade Distress Ink through a star stencil; and splattered everything once again, but this time with Pure Black and Titanium White, acrylic paints.  That set the stage for my photo, which was matted with white cardstock and backed with a happy mix of Pretty Little Studio prints, including No Peeking, Warm Wishes, and Deck the Halls, all anchored with silver-threaded, straight, machine stitching, and torn and folded Glitter Ice Vellum, as well as cheesecloth for added interest.  It was then sandwiched between a decorated, winter village consisting of Color Snowman Die-Cut snowmen, packages, and birds; Home for Christmas Die-Cut houses and trees; Happy Memories Die-Cut houses; Fir Trees Die Cut; and Merry & Bright Die-Cut trees.
I added a watercolored, Make a Wish, Build A Scene Bits tree and house, from my November 2019 Hip Kit Club kit, for a little, extra height.  The latter was wrapped with a Sparkle Silver Tags Die-Cut wreath.
Like I said above, this little village carried over to the right side of the design with many of the same elements already mentioned.  In addition to those, I tucked a darling, Home for Christmas deer, wrapped with a length of Baker's Twine, tied in a bow, into the design, as well as a Sparkle Season Flair Button, Sparkle Silver Tags Die-Cut tree...
Joy Die-Cut house and tree, and With Glee car.  All of the village elements were layered with foam tape up to three layers thick.
The photo was crowned with a duo of Twinkle Lights Word Die Cuts, as well as a Happy Memories Die-Cut mistletoe grouping and the "Home for Christmas" Die-Cut title.
A couple of Christmas Home Word Stickers and the same number of Oh What Fun Stickers...
carry us into the "no place like home" Home for Christmas Die Cut and "merry" Happy Memories Die Cut at the foot of the page.  A sprinkling of Believe Clear Sticker stars complete the look.
Before I run I wanted to share the Winter Cut-Apart + Die-Cut Freebie with any purchase of $1 or more...
the Winter Die-Cut Pack Freebie with any purchase of $35 or more...
and the Color Me Happy Die-Cuts Exclusive Preview Freebie, from a new and upcoming collection, with any purchase of $100 or more.  Eeek!  Melissa, no doubt, has so much goodness in store for 2020.  You won't want to miss out!
And finally, just because this is my little corner of the web ;), I may live in Texas now; but this Kansas City native will always be a fan.  Go, Chiefs!
